The beauty of going to places like this is the opportunity to create a totally unique portfolio. It takes several visits before you get beyond the obvious images and really start to get to know a place. Orientation to a new shooting location is so important. Each image is a statement about what you are seeing and those statements cannot come until there is some clear understanding of the space, the stories and the history.
Featured here are two of my favorite old places: The Ghost Town of Bodie in California and Eastern State Prison in PA. Both portfolios, of which there are many more images than these, began by enjoying the peeling paint and ravages that time has brought to these structures. After additional visits, I began to study and know the places much more intimately.
It is always about the light and shadows, which became a major element of both themes. It was definitely about black and white to emphasize the mood with the shadows. In fact, I call the Bodie portfolio: Shadows and Memories.
The prison images I call Escaping into the Light. In this case, the peeling paint and vulnerability of the structure became part of the supporting elements but it was really about the relationship of the lone prisoner to the light coming from the outside and what that light revealed.
In both cases, I am dealing with available light, my favorite.
